In Reply To V1 and Passport 8500 Comparison (longish) posted by katzalex on March 04, 2005 at 05:26 PM

Message In being up-front, the only radar detector I have ever owned in my V1, and I have had it for over five years. I have never used a Passport 8500 so I am not trying to say that one is better than the other, but I will try to address your negative comments towards the V1.

As for the V1 not being intiutive, it only has ONE knob. You twist the knob to turn the detector on, and it sets the volume. Very easy. You can also press the button in, and it selects one of three modes (A for all, L, and semi-L). I run my detector in "L" mode, which doesn't pick up as many false alarms.

Programming it? I know it can be done, but other than the three modes, there really isn't much more that needs configured on the V1. It really is that easy. Set it to L mode and go.

I can tell by the sound of my V1 which band and how strong of the signal. It uses different tones for different bands, and beeps more frequently as the signal is stronger. I cannot compare it to the 8500, but I have a very good relationship with my V1.

As for false alarms, you will get that with almost any radar detector. For example, on my way to work every day, I pass two grocery stores that set off my K band. I learn to ignore them. IF I ever happen to see the bogey counter go to TWO (and it will make a distinct noise for that), I will absolutely know there is more than just a grocery store.

Besides, I usually don't like to speed in urban areas where there are grocery stores and garage door openers. I prefer to do it somewhere where I can kill a deer and maybe myself and car, but not somebody else. Highly populated areas (where most false alarms happen) are not the place for hauling arse. In the city, just turn the volume knob down a bit.

What I think *DOES* set the V1 apart are the arrows. I have encountered situations where the detector has gone crazy, I passed the cop, but it STILL indicated the signal up ahead (where a blind detector, you would think the cop has passed), and sure enough, another cop up ahead, this one with the radar turned on. Consider those arrows paid for!
